While the number of models and datasets on the platform continues to grow, the report highlights that hardware vendors like NVIDIA and AMD have become the primary drivers of new open model releases in the United States. Conversely, several Chinese labs have shifted toward a frontier-first strategy, frequently releasing models exceeding 700 billion parameters.
The report distinguishes between "attention" and "adoption," noting that while large frontier models garner significant interest, small models remain the practical standard for developers. Models under 1 billion parameters account for the vast majority of downloads, as they are more compatible with common hardware. Furthermore, the Qwen model family has emerged as a major foundation for the community, with over 150,000 derivatives on the platform. The analysis suggests that the ability to run large models locally has been facilitated by community-driven quantization tools like llama.cpp, which allow massive models to function on consumer-grade hardware.
